A NoSmoky uses a double-walled construction and natural airflow to make the fire burn more efficiently. That produces considerably less visible smoke than a traditional fire pit.
Fresh air is drawn in through the openings at the bottom of the pit. This happens by itself, through the heat and the natural draught of the fire.
Part of that air flows straight to the fuel. The fire gets enough oxygen for a strong primary combustion.
Another part of the incoming air flows upwards through the cavity between the two walls of the pit.
On the way up, that air is heated strongly by the heat of the fire.
Through the openings on the inside, the hot, oxygen-rich air comes back out above the fire. There it mixes with the flue gases produced by the first burn.
This supply of hot air creates a secondary combustion. A large part of the remaining flue gases and unburnt particles is burnt after all, which is what creates the recognisable dancing smoke-free flames along the top rim.
A more efficient burn, considerably less smoke and more enjoyment of the fire.
A NoSmoky is not completely smoke-free. Smoke can occur while lighting, and damp wood, insufficient air supply or strong wind can also reduce the low-smoke effect.
